The Sparrows Coffee Tea and Newsstand is a specialty coffee shop in Grand Rapids, MI. Since 2007, Sparrows has been dedicated to serving coffee with hard work, kindness, and inclusivity. Sparrows offers thoroughly crafted coffee, an extensive selection of teas, and a warm and inviting space for community to gather.

Bridge Street Shop Manager

Essential Functions

• Act as a leader of the café and serve as the face and voice of The Sparrows on Bridge.
• Keep café stocked, including placing accurate orders.
• Manage the daily receipts and deposits and identifying discrepancies.
• Manage people; effectively solve day to day issues and conflicts; be available for interviews, reviews and employee personnel issues.
• Manage café maintenance, including projects, chores and general upkeep.
• Assist General Manager with coffee integration, coffee availability and help manage café menus.
• Attend meetings and communicate effectively with management.
• Maintain extensive coffee knowledge; know origins and stories of coffees available; stay informed of industry trends; assist with customer education.
• Work with Management Team to recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ an appropriate number of employees.
• Development of an employee-oriented company culture that emphasizes quality, continuous improvement, key employee retention and development, and high performance.
• Personal ongoing development.
• Complete a training program to learn to train new employees.
• Ensure consistency among all baristas on The Sparrows’ coffee, espresso, milk techniques, and brew methods; Function as in-house QA, ensuring that standards are met with every drink that goes out.
• Consciously create a workplace culture that is consistent with Sparrows’ mission, vision, guiding principles, and values.
• Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback.

• Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among department members that allows for disagreement over ideas, conflict and expeditious conflict resolution, and the appreciation of diversity as well as cohesiveness, supportiveness, and working effectively together to enable each employee to succeed.

• Act as the primary in-cafe person responsible for making sure equipment is calibrated appropriately and in good working order.
• Administer monthly coffee trainings and/or meetings; Communicate with staff about details; Ensure all employees attend, arrive on time, and act in a professional manner.
• Manage Sparrows’ social media accounts
• Other duties as assigned

Supervisory responsibilities
• Supervising and managing retail café employees

Qualifications
• Experience and proficiency with espresso preparation standards
• Desire to educate others about our coffee
• Demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for coffee
• Demonstrated ability to deliver customer service up to Sparrows’ standards
• Great communication skills both with employees and customers
• People management skills
• Problem solving and multitasking ability
• Familiarity with spreadsheets, Google Docs and other computer tools

Physical Demands
• Stand and walk—must be able to stand for shifts and move about the café
• Perform repetitive motion with the hands, wrists and forearms to operate espresso machinery
• Taste/Smell – ability to detect and perceive smell of coffee
• Talk/hear – frequently communicates with customers
• Carry weight, lift – lift up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally

Work environment
• Work is performed in the cafe
• The work environment can be noisy
